Description

This Amitayus is seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with the hands held in dhyanamudra, clad in a voluminous dhoti and adorned with various jewelry. The face has a serene expression flanked by large earrings and surmounted by an elaborate tiara.

The cult of Amitayus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, was popular in Tibet; followers of the Amitayus believed that he held a jar containing the elixir of life, amrita. This sculpture is holding this jar of immortality in his hands, in a gesture of meditation. The amitayus is often depicted in the aspirational buddha form, wearing jewels and a crown.
